Nitrogen cycling in shelf waters is crucial to reduce surplus nutrients, which rivers pour out into the ocean. Yet many of its aspects are poorly understood. Petra Pjevac and Michael Wagner from DOME/JMF were part of an International Team, led by scientists from the Max-Planck Institute for Marine Microbiology in Bremen, which have now succeeded in finding answers to a longstanding mystery in a key process of the nitrogen cycle.
